1850: On this day in 1850, Vice President Millard Fillmore is sworn in as the 13th president of the United States. President Zachary Taylor had died the day before, five days after falling ill with a severe intestinal ailment on the Fourth of July. Read more here…
1913: Death Valley, California hits 134 °F (~56.7 °C), the highest temperature recorded in the United States.
1925: The infamous Scopes-Monkey Trial began in Dayton, Tennessee. In this trial high school science teacher John Thomas Scopes was accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law. Read more here…
1965: The Rolling Stones single “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” from the group’s 1965 album Out of Our Heads, climbs to No. 1 on the Billboard charts on this day in 1965. Although the band had been playing together since 1963, this was their first No. 1 hit in the United States.
1992: The Alaska court of appeals overturns the conviction of Joseph Hazelwood, the former captain of the oil tanker Exxon Valdez. Hazelwood, who was found guilty of negligence for his role in the massive oil spill in Prince William Sound in 1989, successfully argued that he was entitled to immunity from prosecution because he had reported the oil spill to authorities 20 minutes after the ship ran aground.
